Staying healthy into the new school year

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

Lego League 2019

Let's Go LEGO!

CONGRATULATIONS to STORM (Smart Teens Of Rare Minds)!
Iqra Adrees, Zainab Alhasni, Saleha Bano, Aishah Binti Mohamad Nazri, Chahed Dennaoui, Farzana Farzana, Aayusha Subedi and Laiba Usman.

Yr 9 iSTEM attended the First Leggo League (FLL) Regional Robotics Tournament for 2019 on the 12th November. The team has advanced to the National Championship! This is an amazing achievement as a 'rookie' team.

This year's Mission was called 'City Shaper' and the object of the game was to shape our growing city with more stable, useful and accessible buildings or structures. Teams needed to have designed, built and programmed a LEGO Robert to complete the Missions. Throughout the competition, teams were judged on their adherence to the FLL Core Values, including teamwork, Co-oppertition and Gracious Professionalism.

The STORM team has received a trophy for Gracious Professionalism. This is a testament to the developing teamwork, leadership and professionalism our girls show when they are out there in the world. I believe it is the most important trophy of the competition as this is such a focus core values. The girls have worked solidly this year and Mr Henstock has driven them pretty hard through iSTEM to develop their independence and collaboration skills and I am very happy to have come in as a 'facilitator' in term 4 and seen it come to fruition.

We are very proud of them and grateful for providing the opportunity for us to explore the development, and subsequent success, of project based learning through the iSTEM course.

From Lego League Website

FIRST® LEGO® League is a competition catering for upper-primary and lower-secondary school students. Every year, teams of up to 10 students build, program and compete with a robot, while also learning about a modern problem in science and engineering and developing solutions for it. The entire competition for the year is based around one of these themes: Past themes include natural disasters, senior citizens, food health & safety, climate change, medical science, and nanotechnology. Tournaments are run with the feel of a sporting event, and teams compete like crazy while having the time of their lives. What FIRST® LEGO® League teams accomplish is nothing short of amazing. Its fun. Its exciting. And the skills they learn will last a lifetime.

Students from year 7 attended swim school every morning of week 4 in term 4. With a variety of swimming levels, the swim school lessons were an opportunity for students to build up their confidence in the water and to develop their stroke skills. It was a safe environment that encouraged the girls to be confident in their ability and to give them the skills to be safe in the water. All teachers were very pleased with the behaviour and effort of each student, both in the water and on the walk to the pool. Well done Year 7!

Chookas!

Dance students from years 9 and 10 were given the opportunity to go on a dance excursion into Sydney. They were invited to attend the performance of Sydney Dance Company's workshop with 20 students that were chosen from across NSW. The students were very excited to see this performance because two fellow students, Chahed Dennaoiu & Assiya Hasna, were among the 20 students performing alongside professional Sydney Dance Company dancers. For some of our students this was the first time they have been in a professional theatre to see a performance and they have made memories that they will not forget. We hope they have been inspired and that this will encourage their passion for dance.

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Shakespeare Extravaganza!

Students were invited to visit Sydney Opera House and be treated to a performance of Macbeth by Bell Shakespeare. Studying Shakespeare is an essential component of their English studies, and it is especially rewarding to see the written text performed on stage. Our students were also given the opportunity to partake in an audience Q&A with the cast and production team to gain insight into Shakespeare's most famous text. We would like to thank Ms Issa and Ms Ahmad for coordinating the day, but we would also like to celebrate how thoughtul and respectful our students were during the performance and during the Q&A.

See our gallery for photos from the day.

Is your child in Year 9 to 12 curious about their career choices? Now they can use LifeLauncher, a free online tool to explore and simplify their career choices.

Your child can explore courses and careers in-depth, at their own pace, anytime, anywhere and on any device. The tool includes 4,000 careers and 1,500 course options, all in one place.

How does it work?

Encourage your child to jump online and complete the 5-minute personality and subject quizzes to be matched to a range of career options that suit their passions and strengths.

If they take both quizzes, they’ll get more refined suggestions. They can even create free online pinboards to shortlist the courses and jobs that interest them.

When your child creates an account, they can save their searches and build a real understanding of the opportunities and pathways open to them.

What can your child learn about their career options?

Your child can explore the weekly salary of the career options they’re interested in. They’ll also find the employment and growth rates of those careers and the number of workers currently in those fields in Australia.

Each career option shows them the education they need as well as other related careers. They can follow links to other sites to find out more about a course to help them find the best provider for them.

Launch into the future today

Use this tool to chat with your child about their post-school options in a meaningful way.

Inspire your child to find their career match today at LifeLauncher.nsw.gov.au.

Inspiring Women: The Matildas

Supporting Each Other

This August, our inspiring woman is rather a group of strong, supportive, courageous and brave women - Australia's The Matildas.

The Matilda's are the professional female soccer team that represents Australia at notable international events. Recently, The Matildas competed in The FIFA Women's World Cup. Held in France, the FIFA World Cup featured 24 teams from across the globe. The Matilda's took out #2 spot in their group but sadly lost out to Norway in the knockouts. Despite their coach being removed from Soccer Australia six months before the competition, The Matildas remained focused and determined to see through to the World Cup.

Currently, the Matilda's rank #8 in the WORLD!

We at WPGHS are inspired by their tenacity, stamina and courage, and this is why The Matildas are our inspiring women of the month.

It is Jameela's activism for disabled rights, body positivity, body autonomy, racial inclusivity, and much much more that makes her our inspiring woman this month.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

Astonishing Archibald!

At Wiley Park Girls High School we love to feature and speak about women that inspire us to go higher, further and faster in our education. This month we are celebrating Perth artist Tessa MacKay who was awarded the Packing Room Prize at this year's Archibald Prize. A first-time finalist into the Archibald Prize, MacKay took out the coveted prize, earning her $1,500 and the respect of her peers and the country. Her inspired portrait is of famous Australian actor, David Wenham, and features the complexity of reflections. We hope our artistic students are inspired by her triumph and dedication to her craft. Well done Tessa!

Your NAPLAN questions answered

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Watch students ask an expert the tough questions about NAPLAN.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

At Wiley Park Girls High School we love to feature and speak about women that inspire us to go higher, further and faster in our education. Today we have the first clear image of a black hole in our universe! Behind this was Katie Bouman, a fantastic computer scientist, who has lead a team in developing and testing algorithms to process the 5 petabytes (5,242,880 gigabytes!!!) to create a clear picture of the first black hole image. Here at Wiley Park Girls High School we have an astronomy club that loves to host astronomy evenings so this is a very exciting time for our students and our science faculty. We love to see women achieving so much in their STEAM fields. Congratulations Katie!

Let’s start the year off right and prevent student bullying happening in our playgrounds, classrooms and online. If a group of 5-year-olds know the difference between right and wrong, shouldn’t everyone?

Stage 6 students were lucky to be able to attend the Body Worlds Vital exhibition at Town Hall. This excursion complimented their studies in 'Body in Motion' which is a category in their Preliminary HSC course. It informed students about anatomy, physiology and health through viewing real human bodies. It also told the fascinating story of how best to fight life-threatening diseases such as cancer, diabetes and heart ailments, through healthy choices and lifestyle changes, hence inspiring the students to assert themselves and claim responsibility for their own health and wellbeing.

Welcome back students and staff to another great year of learning and knowledge. We would like to take this moment to remind students that we are a Positive Behaviour For Learning (PB4L) school. This means we are safe, respectful learners that are mindful of others and our own needs to learn. We are able to recognise our transitional, outside, learning space and community behaviours and make those the best that they can be. As a school we are commited to practising our PB4L every fortnight during rollcall. We look forward to seeing what 2019 brings us all!

This is a volunteer program that we participate in every year, of which our students are very excited to join. During their visit our students sung traditional christmas carols, performed dance routines and spent their time listening and learning from the aged residents. We hope we brought some Christmas joy to their day!

Congratulations!

Myra Tauei of year 11 and Jasmene Arokapiti of year 9 have won FORM's Sharp Short Dance Competition for 2018. For 10 years the Sharp Short Dance competition 'cultivates talent and performance by choreographers and dancers 21 and under, and presents short, new and innovative dance works by the dance industry’s upcoming talent'. Enocuraged by their dance teacher Ms Edge, Myra and Jasmene submited a 5 minute or less video of a piece of dance they choreographed together. From hundreds of entries Myra and Jasmene were selected to perform in their heat, were chosen to compete in the finals on the 17th of November and were given the opportunity to be mentored by leading industry professionals. Whilst this was already an incredible feat given how many applications were submited, Myra and Jasmene gave a beautiful performance, and WON the Sharp Short Dance Competition for 2018!

Everyone from Wiley Park Girls High School would like to congratulate Myra and Jasmene for not only persuing their passion for dance, but for also being crowned CHAMPIONS of the Short Sharp Dance Competition for 2018!

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Learn more about the 2019 RAM funding.

Fundraising for our Australian farmers

On the 7th of September students and staff dressed in their best farmer outfits and donated a gold coin to Buy a Bale to help our Aussie farmers who are being affected by one of the worst droughts in living memory. In our assembly, our SRC students spoke about the struggles our Australian farmers experience during a drought and how our donations will help them. Students and staff were then suprised by a rendition of 'Click Go the Shears' by our fantastic Music staff. During lunch our SASS staff members organised a sausage sizzle to continue raise funds for Buy a Bale.

Our donations helped provide bales of hay, feed, water and mental support services to farmers across New South Wales and Queensland.

Together we raised $1900 for farmers in need!

More importantly, it was a wonderfully, clear evening so we were treated with a perfect view of Jupiter and four of its moons, Saturn, its rings and one of its moons, Mars, Venus. Those that remained later into the evening were also treated to the twin star system of Alpha Centauri, and a meteor from the Perseids Meteor Shower!

Together we were able to raise funds to purchase a new telescope for our school so our students can continue to experience our galaxy.

Positive Behaviour for Learning

On the 22nd of June 2018, Wiley Park Girls High School had a PB4L launch party in celebration of our new learning system. PB4L stands for Positive Behaviour for Learning. Wiley Park Girls have adapted this new system as we, as a school, promote positive behaviour.

Each year group was presented with a short assembly run by our SRC. The SRC briefly spoke about ways students can encourage positive behaviour through their learning. During the assembly, the SRC hosted games and distributed cool prizes to the winners.

PB4L also hits crossways with our new Mobile Phone Policy. Students took part in many fun activities throughout the day. These activities included; sport novelties, film, origami, karaoke and dance.

The TAS Staff, with the help of students, served delicious foods such as a barbecue, lolly bags, iced biscuits, cupcakes and drinks. Students had a wonderful day learning many ways to inspire positive behaviour.
