High potential and gifted education
Wiley Park Girls High School’s High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) program supports every student, across all stages of learning, to achieve their individual educational potential through our Level Up Program. We nurture and develop each student’s strengths through engaging, high-quality lessons and enriching learning activities, empowering them to grow, excel, and succeed.

What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
At Wiley Park Girls High School, we are proud to deliver a dynamic and inclusive High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) program that empowers students to excel. Aligned with the NSW Department of Education’s HPGE Policy, our approach ensures that students with high potential and gifted abilities are identified, supported and challenged to achieve their best and flourish as confident learners.
We recognise that high potential exists in all students and across all backgrounds. Students may demonstrate potential and gifted performance in one or more of the four domains of ability: intellectual, creative, social-emotional and physical.
We are committed to recognising and nurturing high potential and gifted students, ensuring every student has the opportunity to thrive at our school. These opportunities are evident during learning through the use of:
- Differentiated tasks that adjust pace, complexity and higher-order thinking.
- Formative assessment to monitor growth and adapt learning.
- Explicit teaching of critical thinking and problem-solving strategies.
- Differentiated tasks for skill refinement.
- Supportive learning environments that enable exploration and self-assessment.
- Opportunities for leadership within the classroom.
- Structured peer collaboration and reflection.
- Safe learning environments that encourage confidence, risk-taking, and perseverance.
Our school recognises that every student is unique. We offer flexible, diverse opportunities that allow high potential and gifted learners to explore and grow their strengths both inside and outside the classroom. These opportunities are seen across the school in:
- HPGE Level Up program
- Student Leadership
- Debating and Public Speaking
- School musical performances
- Annual CAPA Art Showcase
- Film and media production
- Knockout and representative sporting teams
- Peer mentoring
- Student leadership (SRC)
- Wellbeing programs
- Whole-school inclusion and wellbeing initiatives
- Social awareness and inclusivity celebrations for Warrior Days
- Elite fitness and training groups
Our students are encouraged and supported to participate in school-wide competitions and events, fostering confidence, teamwork and a strong sense of belonging within our learning community. Some of the events that we regularly participate in include:
- The Premier’s Debating Challenge which helps our students to build logical arguments and confidence in public speaking.
- Gala days and Combined High Schools knockout competitions. These local competitions provide students with opportunities to participate close to home, strengthening connections, teamwork, and a strong sense of community while representing their school with pride.
- Zone, regional and state carnivals for individual and team sports. These events enable our students to trial and compete in sports at regional, state and national levels, fostering discipline, commitment and collaboration.
- The Premier’s Sporting Challenge (PSC) promotes whole-school participation in physical activity with leadership pathways and professional learning.
- Film festivals such as V-Fest and CAPTURE, where our junior and senior student teams collaborate to create award-winning films. These project based competitions assist students with developing creativity, technical filmmaking skills, teamwork, and confidence through authentic, hands-on learning experiences.
